Jamaican Pigeon Peas and Rice Recipe 2021
Peas are known to be a source of plant-based protein and when combined with pigeon and rice in the Jamaican style is very appetizing and nutritious. Pigeon Peas and Rice is served in many homes as of Sunday dinner with fried or Jerk chicken.
Rice and pigeon peas are one of the many favorite dishes for the people on the Island of Jamaica, I will provide the recipe and the outline on how to put it all together to make this dish.
There are certainly a million and a bowl of cooked rice. I’m sure I’ve walked half of those roads by now because rice is one of my favorite dishes.
Friends, I love fried rice, cooked rice, yellow rice, coconut rice, and the list goes on. I have shared many rice recipes over the years of blogging but interestingly, I have not shared a recipe for Jamaican rice and pigeon peas.
I think it may be because I don’t cook it often, which is why it never crossed my mind until recently.
- 2 cups parboiled Rice or Brown Rice
- 3 Sprig Thyme
- 2 Cloves Garlic
- 2 Stalk scallion (Green Onion)
- 1 TBS Sea salt
- 1/2 TBS Cayenne Pepper
- 1 Can Green Pigeon Peas with coconut milk
- 4 cups of water(use the correct amount in the rice cooker or pot)
- 1 Scotch bonnet pepper
We did a quick trick to California a few weeks ago and ate Jamaican pigeon peas and rice every day we were there.
Surprisingly, I didn’t get tired of it and neither did my kids, and it reminds me how much I loved loafers when I was older.
Now that I am back home, there has been a strong rotation around here and nobody complains, which is always an advantage.
- Pour the four cups of water into a rice cooker or pot.
- Combine water with a can of green pigeon peas with coconut milk.
- Pour rice in and stir well so it is completely covered.
- Add the salt, pepper, spring thyme, Garlic, and scallion (Green Onion) stir well.
- Place scotch bonnet pepper in pot/Rice cooker.
- Turn on the rice cooker/ Turn on the stove under the pot.
- Let cook for approximately forty-five minutes or until ready.
- If using the stove, cook on low fire, and keep a close eye on it.
- When Rice is ready turn off the stove.
This rice when done can be served with any other meats that were prepared along with vegetables.
Making rice and Pigeon peas Jamaican style is very easy to do, it will be necessary to make sure that you cook on low fire, if not it will get burn, you want to avoid that.
This is especially critical when it is being done on the stovetop, it is not of great concern when a Rice cooker is used.
Pigeon peas and rice are similar to the most popular rice and peas. The pigeon peas and rice are simmered in a coconut broth seasoned with thyme, garlic, onion, and peppers.
It’s a fairly simple recipe and it goes well with stews such as jerk chicken, fish stew, or oxtail. These Baked Pork Chops pictured above go well with them too. Cheers!

I know it’s typical to say this, but one of my favorite things about the island is reggae. Yes, I know that everyone says that, but honestly, reggae is my favorite musical genre.

So I’ve been cooking Jamaican pigeon peas a lot lately, which is strange to me. Growing up, she used to run away from everything peas and beans, especially those mixed with rice. However, adulthood has changed me and opened my taste buds.
I really enjoyed this recipe for the use of coconut milk. Using coconut milk in your rice is revolutionary, it really adds flavor to your rice. Now if you want to give your usual rice dish a twist, this is the recipe you must try.
If you don’t have pigeon peas you can substitute:
- Black-eyed peas.
- OR – Yellow-eyed peas.
- You can alternatively use baby lima beans.
- OR – To further vary the flavor use lentils.
